Class Description:

One quilt. One valley. One story — split in half, but still holding generations together.

Join Kimra Douglass for a moving presentation centered around a remarkable pioneer-era quilt, made in the Salt Lake Valley in 1857. This quilt is more than fabric and thread — it’s a powerful symbol of women’s creativity, compassion, and resilience. Crafted as a collective effort by women in a tight-knit community, each block reflects the maker’s personal voice and skill, while the finished piece stands as a tribute to connection and care.

This particular quilt has an extraordinary story: it was intentionally cut in half in the late 1800s. Today, Kimra preserves one half — the other resides in a museum collection. She’ll share the full story of this historic piece, including:

  • Why and how it was made

  • The moment it was divided — and why

  • The legacy of the women who stitched it

  • How this quilt speaks to us today, almost two centuries later

You’ll leave not just with knowledge, but inspiration — a reminder that the stitches we make today connect us to a long and sacred tradition of women making beauty, meaning, and comfort from what they had.
